who we are

Heard is an app for sharing one song a day with your friends. When this policy says "we" or "us", it means the people who make Heard. You can reach us any time at hello@jointheheard.app.

what we collect

Your phone number, so we can sign you in with a text message code. We never show it to other people.

Your username and, if you add one, your profile photo.

The songs you post (the song, artist, artwork and preview link) and the day you posted them.

Your friends and friend requests, the songs you like or skip, and the songs you save.

If you turn on notifications, a push token for your device and your notification settings.

Any reports you send and the people you block.

Basic technical records kept by our hosting provider, such as the time of a request and your IP address, to keep the service secure and working.

We don't collect your location, contacts or advertising identifiers, we don't show ads, and we don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.

the waiting list

If you join the waiting list on our website, we keep your email address, the date you joined and, if you followed a link from somewhere like TikTok or Instagram, which one. We use it to tell you when Heard launches and to send you news, updates and offers about Heard. We do this because you asked to join, and you can change your mind at any time.

Every email we send has a link to unsubscribe, or email hello@jointheheard.app and we'll take you off the list. We keep your email address until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it.

Our website doesn't use cookies, analytics or trackers.

how we use it

To run Heard: signing you in, showing your song to your friends, counting likes and streaks, and keeping your history.

To send the notifications you choose, like when a friend posts or likes your song.

To keep Heard safe: looking into reports, removing content that breaks our terms, and stopping abuse.

To answer you when you contact us.

We don't sell your information, and we don't use it for advertising.

our legal reasons (uk and eu)

We use your information because we need it to provide the service you signed up for, because we have a legitimate interest in keeping Heard safe and secure, and, for notifications and your profile photo, because you chose to give it to us. You can turn notifications off or remove your photo at any time.

who can see what

Your username and profile photo can be seen by other Heard users, so friends can find and add you.

Your songs, streaks, likes and history are only shown to your friends.

Reports and blocks are private. The person you report or block is not told.

companies that help us run heard

Supabase hosts our database, sign-in and photo storage, on servers in London.

Cloudflare hosts our website (jointheheard.app), so it sees the technical details of your visit, like your IP address.

An SMS provider (Twilio) sends your sign-in codes, so it receives your phone number.

Expo delivers push notifications, so it receives your push token.

Song search, artwork and 30-second previews come from Apple (the iTunes Search API), so the words you search for are sent to Apple.

When you choose to open a song in Apple Music or Spotify, that app or website handles it under its own privacy policy.

These companies only use your information to provide their service to us.

how long we keep it

We keep your information while your account is open.

You can delete your account in the app (your profile, then settings, then "delete my account"). This immediately and permanently deletes your profile, photo, songs, friends, likes and saved songs.

Our hosting provider keeps technical records for a limited time. We may keep a report for as long as we need it to protect other people.

your rights

You can ask for a copy of your information, ask us to correct or delete it, object to how we use it, or ask us to limit it. Email hello@jointheheard.app and we'll reply within a month.

If you're in the UK and unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).

children

Heard is not for anyone under 13. If you think someone under 13 is using Heard, tell us and we'll delete their account.

keeping it secure

Everything is sent over encrypted connections, and our database only lets you see your own information and your friends' songs.

changes

If we change this policy we'll update the date at the top, and tell you in the app if the change is important.
